Food Serving Sizes and Calories

At this station, you will find a variety of realistic food models, representing accurate serving sizes set by the USDA. Visualizing accurate serving sizes for different foods can be a difficult concept. In many cases, our food portions are 2-4 times larger than a standard serving. In this activity, please look through the food models and use the corresponding handout to guess how many calories are in each food. You may check your answers with the answer key provided.

Superfoods

Though there is no legal or medical definition, superfoods are nutrient powerhouses that pack large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. Eating them may reduce the risk of chronic disease, and prolong life, and people who eat more of them are healthier than those who don't. Read about several foods that are considered super, what health benefits they offer, and how to fit them into your diet.
